Barrier has released monthly and fiscal year-to-date sales for the period ending January 31, 2012. Sales revenue grew double digits - 17% for the six month period. FR Deck Panel Sales Top 30,000,000 square feet

Barrier and partner MuleHide Products, Inc. reached a huge milestone during January 2012 - sales of the private labeled MuleHide FR Deck Panel product pushed up over the 30,000,000 sq ft mark (since its introduction to the market in 2004). The FR Deck Panel is sold and marketed into the Commercial Modular Sector, commonly used in portable classrooms, construction site trailers, barracks for government bases and modular housing units for railroad expansion projects. The partnership has been very successful over the past several years and we are looking forward to 2012.

Continued Growth in Multifamily in 2012 is Forecasted

An article was just posted on Multi-Housing News On-Line and it sounds like good news for the multifamily sector in 2012.

Last year, multifamily lead the commercial real estate property growth as homeowners turned toward renting vs. buying as people struggled to qualify for financing.

This coming year, the outlook remains positive for growth in the multifamily segment. The vacancy levels in this market are predicted to continue to drop and financing requirements remain more stringent...both signs that people will opt for alternatives to owning a single family home.

On November 30th - 10:00 a.m., International Barrier held their Annual General Meeting in Vancouver, B.C. All four members of the Board of Directors were present - David Corcoran, Michael Huddy, Victor Yates and Craig Roberts. The items that were up for shareholder vote were as follows:

1. Set the number of Directors at four - approved
2. Election of Directors - the existing four Directors were approved
3. Appointment of Auditors - BDO was approved

September 2011 Housing Starts - Great News for Multifamily construction

September housing stats were released...the good news is housing starts were up 15% over earlier projections...pushed by large increases in multifamily. The seasonally adjusted rate was 658,000 versus the analyst predictions of 590,000.

The main driving force in the increase...housing starts for buildings with two or more units up 51.3% to a 233,000 rate; while single-family home construction increased 1.7% to a 425,000 rate.

Starts grew in all regions...with the West leading with an increase of 18.1 and South following close behind with an increase of 15.7.

Barrier is excited to hear the release as it coincides with the uptick in sales volumes of Barrier products shipping out recently. Through recent successful R&D testing - using LP® OSB panels and Barrier's Pyrotite® technology, the scope of current UL 2 hour interior burn wall assembly - U349 (Click to view) was expanded to allow the use of fiberglass insulation in addition to the original mineral wool insulation to allow flexibility and competitive pricing options. In addition, a new UL listing - W408 (Click to view) was added as a one-hour exterior burn rating. The overall goal achieved from this R&D testing project was to add more options for architects, engineers and builders of multi-story mixed used commercial buildings and zero-lot line construction.

Barrier just released July 2011 sales results. Revenues were up 44% and sales volumes of shipments were up 45%. This was the largest month of shipments out since back in August 2008.

The Department of Planning and Permitting Building Division for the City and County of Honolulu has approved the request to allow the use of LP® FlameBlock® Fire-Rated OSB Sheathing in installations and structures governed by the city/county codes in Honolulu. In addition, to being fire-rated, the panel produced for Hawaii - uses LP's SmartGuard® OSB panels that are Zinc Borate treated for protection against Formosan termites as required due to climate conditions. The newest issue of Engineered Wood, released June 30 - features LP® FlameBlock® Fire-Rated OSB Sheathing in a mixed-use residential and retail structure. Grimm + Parker Architects designed the 400,000 sq ft mixed use building that is located just outside the University of Maryland campus. FlameBlock® was selected to meet a 2 hr fire-rated wall assembly requirement while reducing labor and material costs. 2011 World of Modular Show - Las Vegas, NV

Barrier's President, Dr. Michael Huddy, participated with Mule-Hide Products and ABC Supply Co. at the 2011 World of Modular show March 12th-15th in Las Vegas. Mike served as a technical advisor and support for the Mule-Hide FR Deck Panel that Barrier manufactures. The show was well attended this year by the owners, presidents, and decision makers of leading modular manufacturers. This provided a great opportunity for Dr. Huddy to help showcase the FR Deck Panel as an optimal solution for Class A and Class C flame spread requirements coupled with the wind-uplift resistance needed for commercial modular roof applications. The FR Deck Panel is also available on a Formosan Termite resistant panel for potential use in modular construction for relief efforts that require termite resistance on incoming construction (ex. Haiti, Venezuela, and Japan.) Barrier sales volumes of the FR Deck Panel are up 10% so far this fiscal year (Jul 2010 - Feb 2011) over the same time last year. We look forward to continued success in this market.

We just released the sales results for January 2011 - Monthly Sales Revenue was up 62% in January 2011 over January 2010...with square footage of shipments up 99%. These increases are being achieved during our traditionally "slower" months as well as year- to-date. Fiscal year over year (July 2010 through January 2011)...square footage of shipments are up substantially as well at 62%. International Barrier Technology Reports the Ratification of a Three-year Supply Agreement with LP® Building Products

The agreement extends the exclusive supply agreement ratified in January 2010 through December 31, 2013. Under the terms of the agreement, Barrier Technology Corporation will continue to manufacture LP® FlameBlock® Fire-Rated OSB Sheathing, utilizing Barrier's proprietary Pyrotite® Technology, at Barrier's existing manufacturing facility in Watkins, MN.

Another structural wall assembly project for Barrier’s Pyrotite® products (private labeled LP® FlameBlock® Fire-Rated OSB Sheathing) has been secured! This time the architect specified our products into Barrier’s UL wall assembly - U349 for a large apartment complex out on the East Coast. This design is built to meet a 2-hour rating and requires two-sided LP® FlameBlock® Fire-Rated Sheathing. The project, scheduled to begin soon, will require a couple rail car loads of material – 2011 is starting off well for the wall assembly market! Stay tuned as pictures of the material being installed may be yet to come in the near future.

November 2010 Sales Results

First before we get started with November sales results...here are a couple pictures of our beautiful snow piles:) from this latest blast. It won't be melting any time soon with the negative temperatures we are seeing now either.

On to the sales report...Barrier has released monthly revenue and sales volumes results for the period ending November 30, 2010. Overall revenue generated during the month is $304,031* vs. $266,719 during the same period in 2009 (*this amount is actually lower by approximately 24% from previous years total revenue as the pass through charges for both substrate and outbound freight have been reduced due to the Supply Agreement for treatment only with LP^® Building Products) . Revenue into the Residential Roof Deck/Wall Assembly/Structural Insulated Panel Market during November was 415% higher than revenues into that market in November 2009. Monthly revenue attributable to the Commercial Modular industry decreased slightly (10%) vs. the comparable period in 2009.

Sales volume of shipments of Barrier products for the month of November 2010 was 579,800 sq. ft. This is an increase of 22% over the 475,300 sq. ft. that was shipped during November 2009. Sales into the Residential Roof Deck/Wall Assembly/Structural Insulated Panel market continue to grow year over year, as a result of our partnership with LP^®. During the reporting period sales into this market increased significantly by 640%. Sales into the Commercial Modular sales decreased during the month (25%) over shipments in November 2009. Total combined sales volumes for the current year-to-date period (Jul-Nov 2010) are 67% higher (3,004,800 sq. ft. vs. 1,802,400 sq. ft.) over the comparable period in 2009. This reflects considerable increases in both the Commercial Modular and the Residential Roof Deck/Wall Assembly/Structural Insulated Panel markets (31% and 203%, respectively) fiscal year over year. Revenue into the Residential Roof Deck/Wall Assembly/Structural Insulated Panel Market was 64% higher than revenues into that market in October 2009. Revenue attributable to the Commercial Modular industry increased 16% over the comparable period in 2009.

Sales volume of shipments of Barrier products for the month of October was 650,848 sq. ft. This is an increase of 53% over the 424,100 sq. ft. that was shipped during the same period last year. Both Residential Roof Deck/Wall Assembly/Structural Insulated Panel and Commercial Modular sales increased substantially (99% and 23%, respectively) over shipments in October 2009. UL - U350 Two-Hour Interior Party Wall Assembly Allows New Configuration; LP® FlameBlock® Fire-Rated OSB Sheathing on either side of studs.

Barrier is pleased to announce that UL - U350, a UL two-hour rated interior party wall (Barrier ESR-1365: Application 4.3.3) has been approved in a new configuration (Configuration B) that allows LP^® FlameBlock^® Fire-Rated OSB Sheathing (LP^®FlameBlock^®) to be moved to the interior stud wall cavity.

As a back-to-back party wall (essentially two one-hour walls built next to each other separating units within a single building), this wall uses LP^®FlameBlock^® in an attempt to provide the required fire protection without the need for a "shaft-wall liner" with metal H-studs running vertically between the two walls. LP^®FlameBlock^® adds shear strength to the wall, as each layer of LP^®FlameBlock^® consists of a layer of LP^® OSB coated with Barrier's patented Pyrotite^® fire-retardant coating.

While the wall can still be specified and build with standard configuration A (LP^®FlameBlock^®) plus one layer of 5/8" Type X gypsum on the living side space of the wall), the new configuration offers some potential benefits:

*It may be userd to address vertically up the length of the wall, particularly if extended length (10-foot or 12-foot) LP^®FlameBlock^® sheets are used; attachment of ceiling/floor trusses on the interior ("living area") side of the wall under this configuration would not penetrate the LP^®FlameBlock^® placed in an interior stud cavity.

*The wall's living-side surface becomes 5/8" Type X gypsum nailed directly to the stud wall, providing easier cut-ins and access for electrical and plumbing elements (each of these penetrations, though, may need to be fire-blocked; please check with local code officials or Authorities Having Jurisdiction).

Barrier CEO, Mike Huddy, contributes a byline article on fire retardant technology and the fight against wildfires. He notes that one of the prime considerations of US building codes is fire protection, and he surveys a set of fire-retardant materials historically used in construction, including FRT plywood. He describes how Pyrotite, in addition to its ability to release water in conditions of fire, is both landfill-safe and economical, since its application to structural wood sheathing represents a significant savings in both materials and installation costs.

Discovery.com contributing writer Alyssa Danigelis describes the Pyrotite system in a column about sustainable fire technology. In the wake of the destructive Fourmile Canyon wildfires in Colorado in September, she notes that the chemical composition of the slurry dropped on fires from the air "might not be able to hold the line," and notes that Pyrotite represents a viable, non-hazardous alternative due to its ability to release water when fire hits it. She notes that residents of Fourmile Canyone plan to rebuild, and that doing so in a more sustainable, fire-resistant way would be a wise strategy

Writer Mary Rose Roberts profiles Barrier in a story on the problems with fire-retardant-treated plywood and the advantages of Pyrotite. Barrier CEO, Mike Huddy, is quoted on the process by which FRT plywood can lose structural integrity over time, and he notes that in contrast, the Pyrotite coating offers a barrier that comes between fire and the underlying wood panel. This layer has a molecular structure that contains a large volume of water, which is just below the combustion point of wood and slows the spread of a fire while actually enhancing structural integrity.

Barrier is proud to announce that Underwriters Laboratories (UL) has recently issued an engineering evaluation approving the use of steel studs in UL Fire-Resistive Wall Assembly U349, a two-hour exterior wall that uses two-sided coated LP® FlameBlock® to replace a double layer of exterior gypsum wallboard.

UL U349 has been designed specifically for wall applications in buildings of Type IIIA construction, which allows for the use of fire-retardant-treated wood in the exterior walls of commercial and multi-occupancy buildings such as student housing, senior housing, medical care facilities, mixed-use retail and residential, hospitality (hotel/motel) and other residential as well as non-residential uses. Prior to the new engineering evaluation, builders building to U349 were required to use fire-retardant-treated studs in the exterior walls, a requirement that some found difficult to meet due to sourcing constrictions. Thus, the ability to use steel studs give architects greater leeway in wall design and contractors greater sourcing options.

Barrier National Sales Manager, James Dukart, was recently in the metro Washington, DC area to deliver AIA-accredited classes on Fire-Retardant Cementitious-Coated OSB for use in Wall and Roof Applications, as well as to meet with architects and builders currently specifying and using LP® FlameBlock® in projects.

Included in this article are pictures he took of a student housing complex just off the University of Maryland campus that features LP® FlameBlock® (two-side coated) as exterior wall sheathing. Note that the construction is a five story wood-frame (on podium) construction type IIIA, where wood is allowed in exterior wall but must be fire-rated ( LP® FlameBlock® is part of UL assembly U349 in this construction, achieving a two-hour fire rating).

Note also that the white-faced LP® FlameBlock® panels (the white surface is Pyrotite®, Barrier's patented fire-rated coating bonded directly to the underlying OSB panels) is being covered with a building wrap (green wrap in the photos). That wrap will in turn be overed iwth a brick facade and/or exterior siding; while LP® FlameBlock® provides structural sheathing as well as fire-resistance in a single panel, it is designed (in this wall assembly as well as in all others) for use with exterior cladding.

In this particular job, LP® FlameBlock® is replacing what would otherwise have been double layers of exterior-rated gypsum; the architects and builders report significant time and cost savings realized through using a single fire-rated panel in place of either a double layer of gypsum or single layer of gypsum along with a single layer of structural sheathing. LP® FlameBlock™ passes California 12-7A-1 Burn Test

LP® FlameBlock™ Fire-Rated OSB has recently passed the California OSFM (Office of the State Fire Marshal) Chapter 122-7A-1 test: Fire Resistive Standard for Exterior Wall Siding and Sheathing.

FlameBlock™ -- manufactured by Barrier Technology Corporation for LP (Louisiana Pacific) Building Products, Nashville, TN passed a series of tests using FlameBlock™ as sheathing covered by LP® SmartSide® Lap and Panel Siding (Precision Series -- strand substrate) and using 1/2" cedar shingles. Builders can now use FlameBlock™ with these coverings -- as well as plain-bevel solid wood lap siding of various widths, including cedar and other species -- to address requirements of Chapter 7A of the California Building Code.

LP® FlameBlock™ Fire-Rated OSB was featured by LP Building Products at the National AIA (American Institute of Architects) Convention in Miami in early June.

FlameBlock™ was featured in two different wall constructions - one ads a component of an exterior fire-rated wall for houses and buildings in areas prone to wildfire, and one as a component in external walls for Type III-A construction (the latter construction utilizing two-side-coated FlameBlock™).

The Type III-A wall assembly was of particular interest to architects who are building multi-story wood-frame commercial buildings such as hotel-motel, senior living facilities, student housing and related multi-occupancy or mixed-use buildings. This wall assembly is listed by Underwriters' Labs (UL) as its U349 wall assembly. LP® FlameBlock™ Fire-Rated OSB Sheathing Demonstration on "You Tube"

LP® FlameBlock™ Fire-Rated OSB Sheathing's fire resistance was on dramatic display April 15, 2010 in Sacramento, CA, where Barrier and LP Building Products co-hosted a product demonstration for architects, builders, designers, and fire officials. The event took place at the Sacramento Fire Department Division of Training.

The demonstration features two similar structures -- one sheathed with standard raw OSB (oriented strand board and the other featuring FlameBlock™ as wall sheathing. Each was set afire with a fuel source both inside and directly in contact with an outside wall of the structure. Within seconds, the OSB-only (unprotected) structure is staring to spread flames, and by the three minute mark is engulfed in flames. Within seven to nine minutes, all sheathing has been burned through, all framing timbers have been charred and the structure has been destroyed.

The FlameBlock™ protected structure, on the other hand, remains standing and only show some charring in areas in direct contact with the fire source.

Barrier & LP Talk III-A Walls with Engineers, Architects

Barrier National Sales Manager Jim Dukart spent early May in suburban Washington, DC, discussing Barrier/LP Wall Assembly U349 (UL listed) with structural engineers and architects on the East Coast.

The U349 wall assembly is an exterior, wood-stud limited load bearing wall rated two hours for interior fire exposure. It features two layers of Type X gypsum on the interior face, 2x4 or 2x6 fire-retardant treated wood studs and FlameBlock 2-sided (coated on both faces of the OSB) on the exterior. The two-sided FlameBlock product replaces two layers of Type X gypsum on the exterior face of the wall (see GA WP 4136 for a representative two-hour assembly featuring four layers of Type X gypsum) and offers both structural strength and fire protection in a single panel.

The early May meetings were hosted by Cates Engineering, which has studied the use of wood-frame construction in multi-story residential, commercial and mixed-use construction for several years. Cates has, in fact, produced a packet that details structural engineering concerns around five-story wood construction. Developers and architects looking to capitalize on the use of the U349 wall assembly to shave construction costs and time, and/or allow for a larger footprint or additional height on suitable Type III-A construction, are encouraged to contact Barrier for more information and a referral to Cates Engineering.

Barrier will also be participating with LP in the Hospitality Design Expo in Las Vegas later this month, and in the national AIA Expo in Miami in early June; the U349 wall assembly will be a featured topic at each.

Two-sided FlameBlock is being used on the exterior walls of this Type III-A mixed use building.

Blazeguard is now LP FlameBlock Fire-Rated OSB Sheathing; Updated ICC ESR-1365 Issued

Announced on January 19, 2010 at the International Builders' Show in Las Vegas, International Barrier Technology has entered an agreement to produce LP FlameBlock Fire-Rated OSB Sheathing for LP Building Products (Nashville, TN).

Subsequent to the agreement, Barrier is also announcing a new International Code Council Evaluation Services Report -- ICC ESR-1365 that adds LP FlameBlock as a listee to the report. Per the report, LP FlameBlock is equivalent to Blazeguard for all ICC-listed applications on the ESR.

The new ESR has also been updated to an issue date of April 1, 2010, and includes a new 1-hour wall assembly featuring one-sided FlameBlock for a wall fire-rated to one hour from either side of the structure (Section 4.3.4 of ESR-1365).

Barrier Presents at FIRE 2009 Conference in Chicago

Last week, Barrier Technology's National Sales Manager, Jim Dukart, participated in a Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Products Panel Session at the FIRE 2009 Conference in Chicago, IL.

Dukart was one of five panelists on the WUI group, and one of only two companies that is currently selling product in California based on fire code changes in the Golden State enacted in 2008. Barrier sells it Blazeguard Fire-Rated Sheathing as an ignition-resistant sheathing for exterior walls as well as ignition-resistant under-eave and/or soffit material for California wildfire zone construction. Barrier currently has distribution and product on the ground in both Northern and Southern California, and have seen growing interest on the part of architects, builders and code officials throughout the state.

Second rail car of material to Camp Pendleton, CA ordered

Today, we received the purchase order for the second rail car of Barrier's Mule-Hide FR Deck Panel to ship to Camp Pendleton in California. The product is being used to meet the fire code requirement for the Class C Commercial Modular Assembly for this government barracks project. The shipment is planned for later this month to correspond with their building schedule. As more and more projects like this select the FR Deck Panel product, we hope it will start becoming the "norm" as the cost and installation benefits and success stories are shared in the industry.

Barrier Technology's National Sales Manager, Jim Dukart, attended the International Code Council (ICC) Annual Conference and Code Development Hearings in Baltimore, MD, last week to present Barrier opposition to a code change proposal to alter the definition of fire-retardant-treated wood (FRTW) as used in building code requirements.

The proposed code change, offered by Hoover Treated Wood products, attempted to constrict the definition of FRTW to pressure-treated only products (Hoover's products are pressure-treated with fire-retardant chemicals), rather than to include products that are manufactured using alternative , ecologically friendly methods of application such as Blazeguard's inert, inorganic Pyrotite formulation.

Barrier opposed and opposes the change, primarily on the grounds that product definitions never have been and should not be concerned with method of manufacture, but rather with tested and verified performance criteria.

Dukart was one of five individuals who spoke in opposition to the change, and after further testimony and some IBC Structural Committee deliberations, the proposed code change was disapproved on a unanimous vote, 14-0.

Later in the week, the same code change proposal - S 201 - 09/10, Part II - was heard by the IBC's Residential Building and Energy Committee, with similar comments from both proponents and opponents.

This committee also disapproved the proposed code change, this time by a vote of 10-0.

Diamond Builders in Douglas, GA is the latest addition to Commercial Modular manufacturers using Barrier's Mule-Hide FR Deck Panel. Today, the first truck load of material will be shipping out to them for use in an upcoming project. Using the FR Deck Panel in place of the competition offers a very cost-competitive solution as our product eliminates a full layer/step of installation. Recently, additional competitive pricing analysis was developed and shared with commercial modular manufacturers nationwide. Exciting news - another large government barracks project, Camp Pendleton, has selected to use Barrier's Mule-Hide FR Deck Panel to meet the fire code requirement for a Class C Commercial Modular Assembly! Construction for Phase 1 is set to begin in October, with another phase in the specification process. Just the first phase will amount to a couple rail-car loads of material, which will be shipped out over the next two months or so.

Barrier's Blazeguard products are a great solution for many fire resistant applications. California, with the constant threat of wild-fires and extensive fire codes, is a region we are committed to generate awareness of product offering and penetrate with distribution and future sales. Our ICC-ES Report - ESR-1365 clearly outlines the applications we have been evaluated for. We are also on the California WUI (Wildland Urban Interface) approved building materials list. Structural Insulated Panel Association (SIPA) Launches New Blog

SIPA - The Structural Insulated Panel Association (www.sips.org) has launched a new blog covering topics of interest to manufacturers of and builders or building owners using Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) in both residential and commercial construction. Current topics on the blog include an announcement that SIPs will soon be featured on an upcoming issue of ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, a survey of consumer thoughts on energy efficient homes, and announcement of a SIPs design symposium at the end of the month.

Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) are high performance building panels used in floors, walls, and roofs for residential and light commercial buildings. The panels are typically made by sandwiching a core of rigid foam plastic insulation between two structural skins of oriented strand board (OSB). Other skin material can be used for specific purposes. SIPs are manufactured under factory controlled conditions and can be custom designed for each home or building. The result is a building system that is extremely strong, energy efficient, and cost effective. Building with SIPs will save you time, money and labor.

Barrier's Blazeguard coating, moreover, saves SIP manufacturers and builders even more time, money, and labor by providing a factory-applied 20-minute thermal barrier to the face of a SIP, meeting the requirement of IBC 2603.4, which calls for a thermal barrier in front of solid foam core plastic. Builders are thus spared time and expense of fire-protection SIP panels with single or multiple layers of gypsum wallboard on-site. Ideal opportunities for SIP builders to save money with Blazeguard include those in which gypsum and skilled gypsum labor is hard to get (remote locations), buildings with high ceilings or gradually curved surfaces, locations given to excessive moisture, and modular buildings built in a factory and shipped to a site.

Kraut and Wurst Days- August 1st, 2009, Watkins, MN

A favorite summer Minnesota past-time - the small town festival. This past Saturday, Barrier Technology once again participated in our hometown Watkins "Kraut and Wurst" annual parade. Barrier employees and their families enjoyed promoting our product, Blazeguard Fire-Rated Sheathing, while tossing out candy to the hundreds of kids lining the parade route.

After the parade, many enjoyed the famous bratwurst and sauerkraut treat, while participating in bean bag and volleyball tournaments. We even had one of our parade participants earn 2nd place in the 9 year old level of the Tractor Pull!

Blazeguard Fire-Retardant Paint: Field Applied Class A Flame Spread Protection

Barrier Technology products have been protecting people and property from fire for more than 20 years. A relatively recent addition to our product line is Blazeguard Fire-Retardant Paint, a proprietary intumescent paint that can be applied in the field. Intumescent paints are those that swell and char when exposed to flame, forming an insulative barrier between a fire and its fuel (often but not always wood).

Blazeguard Fire-Retardant Paint provides combustible construction materials a 10-minute, Class A Flame Spread Rating as required by ASTM E-84. Our formulation contains no volatile organic components (VOCs), is low odor and non-hazardous to apply and use. The paint can be applied in the field by following the directions in our Blazeguard Fire-Retardant Paint Application Guide.

Blazeguard Fire-Retardant Paint's intended use is for interior applications where a Class A Flame Spread Rating is required by building code. Government Barracks Project in Georgia - "Peachy"

Barrier is pleased to report the use of the Mule Hide FR Deck Panel in another government barracks project in Georgia. This project is in the final stages of completion and the feedback has been very positive from the commercial modular manufacturer.

Thanks to the ease of use, elimination of an entire installation step, and the labor/materials cost savings; the manufacturer has committed to bid future projects with our panel. In addition, with their ability to accept rail car shipments, freight costs are able to be minimized at time when every penny counts.

Modular, SIPs & Blazeguard: A Winning Combination

At the Structural Insulated Panel Association (SIPA) Annual Conference this past April outside Chicago, Charles Bevier, editor of Building Systems Magazine (www.buildingsystems.com) gave a presentation on the crossover between Structural Insulated Panel (SIP) building systems and modular buildings. According to Bevier, this crossover is not only beginning to happen in the mraketplace, it promises to grow in the near-term future.

This trend is something Barrier has also seen in current quotes and project leads crossing our desks and coming to us via the Internet.

As Bevier pointed out, SIPs -- "pre-formed" panels made by sandwiching solid foam-core plastic betwen OSB boards -- offer an excellent modular construction component. Since the panels are made in the factory, when they hit a modular building site (factory or sometimes on-site for assembly), SIPs are simply set in place and "locked in" to form the core of a structure.

SIPs will also benefit from the new 2009 Energy Code being enacted, Bevier pointed out, a code calling for 15% greater energy efficiency in roof and wall panels.

Barrier sees a growing role for Blazeguard as a coating to SIP panels being used in modular construction. With Blazeguard on either - or both - the outside or inside face of a SIP panel, builders and building owners save considerable time and expense not only constructing their buildings (no extra labor step needed to install insulation or fire-proofing such as gypsum wall board), but the resulting structure contains walls and roofs that are increasingly energy efficient, cost less to build (installed cost) and can be built in a factory or delivered to a job-site in a shorter time frame.

Blazeguard is thus a perfect complimentary product for two growing and increasingly intersecting building methods - SIPs and modular construction. Woodworks Adds Technical Director in Minnesota

WoodWorks (www.woodworks.org), an initiative of the Wood Products Council, has added a new Technical Director in Minnesota. Tom Milton, formerly a regional director with APA - The Engineered Wood Association, recently joined WoodWorks and recently invited Barrier's National Sales Manager, Jim Dukart, to a WoodWorks presentation at a downtown Minneapolis architectural firm.

Woodworks is a cooperative venture of all the major wood associations in North America, as well as research organizations and government agencies. Partner organizations include the American Forest & Paper Association, American Wood Council, APA - The Engineered Wood Association, Canadian Wood Council (CWC), Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association, Southern Forest Products Association, and Western Wood Products Association. Research and government agencies connected to WoodWorks include the Forestry Innovation Investment, FP Innovations - Forintek Division, Natural Resources Canada, and the USDA Forest Service , Forest Products Laboratory. As its mission, organization states that it "provides one-stop access to the widest possible range of information on the use of wood in non-residential structures."

One of the ways in which Barrier can help WoodWorks promote the use of wood in non-residential structures is to address the issue of fire-retardant treatment of wood and its uses in commercial construction. WoodWorks currently has three major areas of geographic focus: the Upper Midwest (Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota); the U.S. Southeast (Georgia, the Carolinas) and California. As such, Barrier welcomes new WoodWorks representation in Minnesota and looks forward to ongoing collaborative technical and marketing initiatives surrounding the use of fire-retardant treated wood in commercial construction in each of these geographic regions.

New Technical Bulletin on Blazeguard SIP finishing techniques

Barrier's Blazeguard Fire-Rated Sheathing provides an ideal interior-face fire barrier for Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs). Our Blazeguard coating meets and exceeds the 15-minute thermal barrier required by the International Building Code (IBC Section 2603.4) and is cited in our ICC Evaluation Services Report ESR-1365 in Section 4.2.d.

Blazeguard is particularly well-suited to the SIP market as it is a factory-applied thermal barrier, obviating the need (and the cost) to install fire-rated gypsum or other fire barriers in the field. In essence, Blazeguard adds to the SIP value-proposition of delivering wall or roof panels that are "plug and play" -- deliver to the job site, drop them in, secure them and move on.

This 8' x 24' panel was manufactured as a Blazeguard SIPs. The interior face (facing towards the studs) has the Blazeguard fire-resistant material applied to it.

A new Barrier publication makes the process even more straightforward. Our new Technical Bulletin "Fire-Rated Finish for Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs)" (below), lays out the steps involved in treating panel seams, patching Blazeguard SIPs and painting or finishing the interior surface. The document also shows a recommended increased fastening regiment so that panel seams don't crack if panels move slightly over time.

Note that in addition to reduced labor, materials and time to finish the interior surface of SIP, Blazeguard SIPs have another inherent advantage over finishing a SIP face with gypsum: Blazeguard can be applied on any size panel up to Jumbo SIPs (8' x 24'), meaning that the total number of seams in a wall is reduced by up to a factor of six (fire-rated gypsum generally comes in 4' x 8' or 4' x 10' sheets).

Commercial Modular Sales Volumes exceed 21,000,000 sq. ft.

The concept of using Barrier's Pyrotite™ technology as part of a fire-rated commercial modular roof deck assembly in partnership with Mule-Hide Products began back in 2002 and 2003. Upon successful completion of fire testing, Class A and Class C Roof Deck Assemblies were listed with UL (Underwriters Laboratories). In 2004, Barrier began to manufacture and private label the FR Deck Panel for Mule-Hide with ABC Supply Company as the primary distribution source.

In Year 1, sales exceeded 1.5 million sq. ft. In Year 2, sales grew 87% to almost 2.8 million square feet. The following year sales grew another 36%, exceeding 3.8 million sq. ft. In 2007, the FR Deck Panel began to evolve into the "product of choice" for a growing number of modular manufacturers. Sales grew another 58% to exceed 6 million sq. ft. The economy and the battered construction industry did impact sales in 2008 - but we still sold about 5.6 million sq. ft. Total sales volume into the commercial modular sector from inception in 2004 through May 2009, have exceeded 21,000,000 square feet.

The FR Deck Panel has secured a large market share among the commercial modular manufacturers. That, coupled with recent break-throughs in Canada and large government projects, presents strong potential for increased sales as the economy begins to slowly recover.

Barrier's National Sales Manager Elected to SIPA Board of Directors

At this year's Structural Insulated Panel Association (SIPA) Annual Meeting & Show, Barrier's National Sales Manager, Jim Dukart, was elected to a three-year term on the SIPA Board of Directors.

SIPA is a non-profit trade association representing manufacturers, suppliers, fabricators/distributors, design professionals, and builders committed to providing quality structural insulated panels for all segments of the construction industry. Barrier and Blazeguard Fire-Rated Sheathing have a long history of service to the SIPs industry, providing a 20-minute thermal barrier for solid core foam plastic insulated wall and roof panels as required in many buildings by the International Building Code.

Mr. Dukart will not only serve on the SIPA Board of Directors, but also as a member of the Suppliers' Committee and the Non-Residential Marketing Subcommittee. Barrier will focus its SIPs efforts on delivering wall and roof assemblies that provide fire protection for SIP panels while reducing construction time and on-site waste, enhancing SIPs' already-strong "green building" profile.

New market opportunites in Canada

Last week, Barrier's President and CEO, Michael Huddy traveled to Alberta, Canada to meet with our Canadian wholesaler, Okaply, local code officials, members of the fire department, Structural Insulated Panel manufacturers, and residential building material suppliers.

Starting May 1, 2009, Alberta's building and fire codes are changing, which is creating significant opportunity for products like Blazeguard Fire-Rated Sheathing. One change taking place is the requirement for implementing fire protection techniques and materials used during the construction phase to protect adjacent buildings from catching fire.

Another viable market opportunity is for the interior wall of structural insulated panels. Mike Huddy and Clint Van Berkel of Okaply visted eGreen, a potential client who constructed a sample interior wall using Blazeguard. They were very pleased with the result.

Blazeguard on a Mission (to Change the Way We Build) - SIPA Annual Show, Chicago, April 2009

Barrier joined the Structural Insulated Panel Association (SIPA) last week in Chicago, participating as a Silver Level Sponsor of the SIPA Annual Meeting with it's theme, "We're On a Mission (to change the Way We Build)."

Barrier's mission within the SIP market is to become the preferred fire-retardant coating for panels used in SIP wall and roof construction worldwide. Blazeguard already has ICC approval (Section 4.2.d of our ICC ESR-1365) as a code-complaint 15-minute thermal barrier for use in inhabitable buildings using solid foam core insulation (Blazeguard has actually been tested to a 20-minute thermal barrier). Blazeguard is already in use in several residential as well as non-residential SIP construction projects across the country, ranging from lake cabins in northern Minnesota to prison buildings in Ohio to fishing boat storage facilities in Alaska.

Blazeguard is applied to traditional OSB (oriented strand board) SIP-skins and shipped to panel manufacturers for assembly into panels. Builders using Blazeguard-coated panels already have a fire-retardant barrier in place - there is no longer any need to add Type X gypsum wallboard as a fire barrier on the interior face of a SIP panel, saving builders the time and trouble of hoisting, blocking, placing and taping multiple layers of gypsum to walls and ceilings.

Barrier is also working on producing Class A and Class C rated SIP roof panels and on testing 1-hour-rated SIP firewalls. While traditional "stick-frame" wood construction has slumped dramatically in the past year, SIP construction has dipped only slightly. SIP construction, moreover, offers significant advantages over traditional stick-built structures, starting with improved energy efficiency, faster construction times and streamlined building design but also offering increased structural strength and better acoustics (filled wall cavities help to deaden sound transmission). Adding Blazeguard to a SIP panel only accentuates these SIP advantages, helping builders save time, reduce waste and create stronger, cleaner, "greener" buildings.

From the shores of New England to the Southern California coastline, Barrier products are now in use in 36 of the 50 United States. Within the past year, moreover, Barrier has sold into a handful of Canadian provinces, and at the recent International Builders' Show (IBS) in Las Vegas (see blog article HERE ), builders from throughout Asia, Africa, Europe and South America expressed interest in Barrier's patented Pyrotite™ coating technology. An IBS visitor from New Zealand was also keen on Blazeguard® Fire-Rated Sheathing.

Our partnership with Mule-Hide Products with distribution of the FR Deck Panel through ABC Supply has helped spread Barrier products across the country. Recent government and military projects in Texas and Louisiana have found Mule-Hide to be a preferred and specified roofing solution, while Barrier's Blazeguard panels have made significant inroads as Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) - ready products in California and Colorado. This coupled with historically strong markets in Florida and Virginia and newer interest in places as diverse as New York, Alabama and Oregon have brought Barrier products nationwide recognition.

Another Government Barracks Project!!!

Barrier is pleased to announce an additional large government barracks project that will require about 5,300 Mule Hide FR Deck Panels. The panels are being used in the UL listed roof assembly and represent Barrier's continued and growing presence in the government/military market.

For this project, Barrier was required to demonstrate compatibility with new product standards that apply to this and future military projects. This is just the first of several stages of construction over the next year at this base. Two additional bases are expected to start building within the year.

Hot off the press...from the International Builders Show (IBS) still in progress in Las Vegas.

This week, Barrier Technology has the pleasure of being part of the SIPA (Structural Insulated Panel Association) Booth at the IBS show. We are showcasing how Blazeguard can be the ultimate solution for the code required thermal barrier in Structural Insulated Panels. In fact, several of the booths in the SIPA area were constructed using Blazeguard panel.

In addition, we are also highlighting the code listings and solutions we provide for the Wildfire Zones of the North West. Blazeguard Catches On in California Wildfire Zone

This week Barrier received its first pictures of a new structure in a California Wildfire Zone that is using Blazeguard Fire-Rated Sheathing as exterior wall sheathing to protect against wildfires.

Pictures of the private residence in the Monterey County area are shown below. Click here to read the full case study. Blazeguard's white Pyrotite surface faces out from the stud wall, providing a Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Products List-approved fire barrier and structural sheathing all in one panel. These panels were cut from 4' x 10' x 1/2" Structural 1 CDX Plywood, ordered by Hayward Lumber of Salinas, California and supplied by Southern California Blazeguard distributor Bear Forest Products.

General Contractor Peter H. Winters Construction specializes in high-end homes in the California mountains, and, along with architect Behzad Kafaie of San Francisco-based Hart Howerton, sought out Blazeguard as an ideal all-in-one panel that met their structural sheathing and ignition resistance needs while taking up less dimensional space than the two-step process of standard sheathing wrapped by half-inch Type X gypsum. An additional - and critical - benefit was that Blazeguard saved considerable time and labor cost on-site, as framer John Asunsion of Divine Construction only had to wrap the house once rather than twice.

Barrier will promote this new project next week at the International Builders Show in Las Vegas (Booth N0557). Additional wildfire zone projects in California and elsewhere are at various stages of development. Stay tuned for more throughout 2009!

WILDFIRE ZONES TO BE AN AREA OF FOCUS in 2009

Barrier management has identified Wildfire Zone applications of Blazeguard^® Fire-Rated Sheathing as a key area of focus for 2009.

At the start of this year, the state of California adjusted its building codes to address the use of fire-retardant materials in Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) areas of the state. Nationally, the International Code Council convened a blue-ribbon panel to address WUI concerns. Against this backdrop, southern California experienced a rash of highly publicized and damaging wildfires in October and November.

In July, Blazeguard Fire-Rated Sheathing was added to the California State Fire Marshal's WUI Products list as an approved product for exterior wall siding and sheathing, for under-eave construction as an ignition-resistant material. Barrier is working with distribution partner Bear Forest Products to deliver product to California for use in wildfire zone construction.

Earlier this month, Barrier CEO, Michael Huddy, visited California to meet with Bear Forest, present Blazeguard to a committee of the American Institute of Architects' Inland Empire (Southern California) chapter and to meet with architects and builders who are currently specifying Blazeguard for use as exterior sheathing on two houses - one in the Monterrey area and another in Napa.

Barrier will promote these projects to architects, builders and designers throughout California. Dr. Huddy has also been asked to present on the use of building materials in WUI zones at a national fire-safe building conference in Chicago in April.

While the current national and state economy has kept much new building at a standstill, Blazeguard offers an all-in-one set of three core benefits that Wildland Urban Interface builders and designers will find hard to resist:

Produced by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), IBS is the housing industry's largest annual gathering. The 2009 IBS will feature more than 1,700 exhibitors displaying the latest in home and building products and services representing more than 250 industry categories. IBS also hosts 250 educational seminars on topics ranging from green building and design trends to construction codes and 50+ housing, as well as home tours and special events. Blazeguard Protects Garage Walls

Barrier National Sales Manager, Jim Dukart, recently visited a construction site in northern Minnesota that is using Blazeguard as a fire-resistant and impact-resistant wall surface for the inside of a shop garage.

In addition to meeting local fire and electrical codes, this garage application (click here to view case study) protects the building's interior surfaces from incidental damage such as from vehicles or forklifts bumping up against walls or tools or equipment that might puncture a gypsum wallboard surface. The building owner also enjoys mold protection and "pre-primed" walls and ceilings ready for a coat of paint as needed.

Blazeguard also lines the electrical control room inside the garage, providing a fire-resistant backing for electrical control panels. In traditional gypsum wallboard construction, electrical panels would need to be hung over studs; using Blazeguard, the panel can be secured anywhere on the Blazeguard-coated wall.

Builders or building owners who do not want or need to fire-protect their entire garage may still want to look at Blazeguard as a fire barrier on walls common to a garage and living quarters. The modular rooms were designed to house heating and plumbing equipment. The FR Deck Panel provides both the fire-rated material, plus structural strength in a single panel. Barrier Visits Southern California Wildfire Zones

Last week Barrier Technology National Sales Manager Jim Dukart and Southern California Sales Representative Wayne Crutchfield visited dealers and builders in the wildfire-prone regions of Los Angeles and San Diego.

Calls were made on Barrier distribution partner Bear Forest Products in Riverside, California, which is reporting increased quoting activity and interest in Blazeguard ever since it was added to the California State Fire Marshal’s Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) approved products list. A day was also spent in the Big Bear Lake area, as well as one in and around San Diego, where just last November wildfires ravaged large areas of the city and forced numerous evacuations and significant property damage.

During the time Dukart and Crutchfield were in California, three wildfires were raging in the Los Angeles metropolitan area; Santa Ana winds had come in early in the week to fan the flames.

For wildfire hazard areas, Blazeguard provides a convenient and economical solution to changes in the California Building Code calling for a layer of ignition-resistant material between siding and stud walls. As an all-in-one structural sheathing and fire barrier, the use of Blazeguard obviates the need to add 5/8” gypsum over exterior wall sheathing. When on-site labor rates (two-steps versus Blazeguard’s one-step process) are factored in, Blazeguard can potentially save builders thousands of dollars while meeting all code restrictions.

Barrier's MuleHide FR Deck Panel Hits the Great White North

This week we received our first order from a new commercial modular customer in Alaska, Builders Choice. They are using both the MuleHide A and MuleHide C FR Deck Panel in their manufacturing process for an upcoming project.

The MuleHide FR Deck Panel was introduced to Builders Choice by Okaply Industries, a new distributor with hubs in Quebec and Alberta. MuleHide has been working to set up distribution for the FR Deck Panel and the commercial modular roof system in Canada for over a year. We are excited at this new opportunity to bring our fire-rated solution to the Canadian building market and diversify ourselves into a new country.

Barrier Visits Major NYC Public Housing Project using Blazeguard Fire-Rated Sheathing for Exterior Walls

Barrier President & CEO Michael Huddy recently toured a major public housing project in metropolitan New York City that is using Blazeguard Fire-Rated Sheathing to protect its exterior walls.

The overall project, first announced in 2006, is a $60 million redevelopment of the Markham Gardens public housing development located in the West Brighton neighborhood of Staten Island's north shore. Blazeguard was chosen for its dual role as a fire-retardant barrier and structural sheathing component for the exterior walls of some 250 units in 24 buildings. Installation of Blazeguard began in mid-summer and will be concluded within the next several months.

"Barrier is proud to be associated with this project, on more than one level," says Huddy. "On the one hand, the innovative use of building materials to offer both fire resistance and structural strength is impressive. In addition, it is nice to be associated with a project designed and built with an eye toward improving living conditions and uplifting the local community."

Huddy met with one of Markham Gardens principal designing architects, Lawrence Benjamin of DHK architects; with Blazeguard supplier Best Building Products of Walden, NY; and on-site with project managers from contractor Speigel Associates.

"Blazeguard offers a healthy balance that gives us a one-or-two-hour fire separation without eating up too much interior space while offering three-dimensional stability," says Benjamin.

Benjamin was so intrigued by Blazeguard's all-in-one fire barrier capabilities that he made a special trip to the job site to see the product once it arrived.

"Hopefully this will become the template for 'green' building," Benjamin adds, speaking of the Markham Gardens project in general, but noting Blazeguard's contribution as an environmentally-friendly, chemical-free fire retardant. "We are fans of the material," he says. "The context in which it is being used is pretty dynamic."

Blazeguard is listed in three different sections of the WUI list; Exterior Wall Siding and Sheathing, Under Eave, and Ignition-Resistant Materials. It is the only material listed under all three categories and one of very few products that have qualified under either the "Under Eave" or "Ignition Resistant Materials" categories.

Blazeguard Protects New York City Apartments

Blazeguard roof deck sheathing is being used in the Markham Gardens affordable housing development, a Staten Island (New York) project c0-developed by the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and the New York City Housing Development Corporation (HDC).

The overall project, announced in 2006, is a $60 million redevelopment of the Markham Gardens public housing development locatsed in the West Brighton neighborhood on Staten Island's north shore. Late last week, we received an order from another new commercial modular customer down in Georgia - Southwest Georgia Wholesale in Ellaville. There are several commercial modular plants down in Georgia - many who currently use the FR Deck Panel, and a couple others we have an opportunity to convert to our product. With the cost fuel continually rising, we are looking for ways to lower the freight cost of the FR Deck Panel as much as possible to all destinations. Barrier owns and is located on a rail spur. Blazeguard Guards against Minnesota Wildfires

While California and Florida may be among the first states that come to mind when you hear the term "wildfire," a forest fire along the Gunflint Trail in northern Minnesota last summer claimed more than 16,500 acres and destroyed dozens of houses and other structures, resulting in millions of dollars in damages and a forced evacuation.

Last week Barrier got a close-up look at two northern Minnesota structures using Blazeguard to both protect against fire damage as well as meet other architectural, design and efficiency goals.

The first structure is a private cabin on Lake Everett, northeast of Ely, Minn. This lake home uses Blazeguard-coated Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) for its entire roof deck. SIP panels consist a layer of solid foam insulation sandwiched between two pieces of oriented strand board (OSB). One face of the OSB is coated with Blazeguard, providing not only the required 15-minute thermal barrier for any foam-core insulated panel, but also a visually pleasing white finish.

The cabin's internal cathedral ceilings are simply the underside a SIP covered with a layer of white paint, with its seams covered with battens. In addition to adding a visually pleasing and slightly rustic finish, the SIP panels offer increased energy efficiency -- along with energy-efficient lighting and windows, the cabin's roof deck panels offer enough insulation so that this cabin, in the far northern reaches of the country, can be and is completely solar-powered and "off the electrical grid" for lighting and heat.

A second structure to the west of Ely is a new luxury lake home being built with a layer of 3/8" plywood covered on both sides with Blazeguard. The owner of this new cabin is building a structure that is "top of the line" in all construction details and practices. This owner has plans for several more buildings on the property and has instructed the builder to use Blazeguard throughout as a way to protect this significant investment from the ravages of wildfires while not in use.
